Today, A Journey of Books has the good fortune of welcoming Rachel Vincent to the stage. Vincent's latest book, PREY ( Shifters series, book 4) is due out July 1, 2009! For those of us who are already Shifters fans, this means that our wait is finally over! I don't know about you, but I find myself constantly staring at the calendar, watching with glee as the days between now and July fly by.Now, if you're not already a fan of Vincent's Shifters series, there's no time like the present to become one. I first picked up the books when Borders suggested the series to me based on my previous browsing history. On a whim, I bought them and am so glad that I did. This is really one of the best shapeshifter series out there. Vincent does a wonderful job of creating depth in her characters and giving us an adrenaline pumping plot that is sure to please. Normally I would post a blurb of PREY, but since it contains spoilers, I'll refrain. You can, however, read my reviews of Stray, Rogue and Pride. While I try to remain spoiler free, the natural of progression of the story is still apparent, so read at your own risk.
Alright, I've told you why I'm excited about the upcoming release of PREY and I've told you why you want to be excited about it. Now let's switch gears and hear a little bit about what Vincent has to say regarding her life, her writing and her upcoming release. I've also heard rumors that the fabulous Faythe might just make an appearance today as well.

Rachel, glad you could make it!Thank you! I’m so glad to be here.
How are things treating you nowadays?
I’m fine. Delightfully busy. ;-)
Ten years ago, is there where you pictured yourself? As a wee tyke, what did you imagine you'd grow up to be?
Ten years ago? No. After college, I didn’t do much writing for a while, so this career would have been a total surprise to me-from-ten-years ago!
It seems like your Shifters books hit the Urban Fantasy world by storm. What are your feelings on the whirlwind success?
Oh, well thank you! I don’t know if I’d call it a whirlwind, but I’m definitely feeling a breeze. ;-) I’m very excited, and grateful for the opportunities that have been tossed my way. And I’m trying desperately to deserve them. To make each book better than the last, so that I feel like I’m moving forward. And that readers are getting their money’s worth.
PREY, the fourth installment, is coming up on us fast with a release date of July 1, 2009. I know your fans out there are antsy. How are you dealing with the anticipation of the big day?
Well, it leaked out early in most places, so I’m already getting feedback. Prey is a very important book in the series. It’s the one that changes everything, and so far, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Even those readers who don’t like what happened have admitted to loving the book, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about that.
As for anticipation, I’m honestly trying not to think about it. And failing. ;-) This job comes with a lot of pressure, and I have to put that aside in order to stay focused on my current WIP.
The books leading up to PREY are so unique in their story-lines. What inspired the story overall and more specifically, PREY?
After the first book in my series (both Shifters and Soul Screamers), the storylines are inspired by the world I’ve created, and the conflict inherent in it, as well as any personal relationships the characters developed in that first book. Once I have the rules of my world and know how everything works, I just ask myself, “What’s the worst possible way this could go wrong?” Then I answer the question.
It certainly does seem like things are always going wrong! Your lead character, Faythe, is a wonderfully strong female lead. Was she modeled after anyone? How'd you come up with her?
No, she wasn’t modeled after anyone in particular, though her mouth is quite a bit like mine, when I was in my early twenties. If I had an opinion, everyone around me was going to hear about it, whether they wanted to or not. I’ve grown out of most of that, and so has Faythe. But that’s really the only bit of her taken from anyone real.
Faythe is a product of her environment. When she was coddled, she got spoiled. When people started expecting more of her, she delivered. She’s risen to every occasion I’ve thrown at her, and I think her development as a character is going very, very well. I’m proud of her. ;-)
I've heard some authors mention that their characters ran away with the book. Are you happy with the direction the story is going?
Oh yes! If I wasn’t happy with it, it would never see print. ;-)
Reviews have already started rolling in for PREY. What are your thoughts so far?
So far, I’m thrilled. But half expecting the other shoe to drop. The reviews so far have been amazing, but I took some serious risks in this one, and am expecting someone to be mad about that, eventually. ;-)
Inquiring minds always want to know - how do you write? Do you have a special routine (special snacks, mood lighting, rock out music)?
No, none of that. I do listen to music sometimes, but my choice of song really depends on the tone of the scene I’m writing. I do always sit in the same place, though. In my recliner, in my den, with my laptop on my lap. It’s been like that from the beginning. The same chair, though I’ve gone through 3 laptops and two lap desks. ;-)

Any other projects you're working on or anything else you'd like to share with us?
Yes! My YA debut comes out August 1 of this year. My Soul to Take is the first in my upcoming Soul Screamers series, about a teenage bean sidhe (banshee). If you want an early peek at Kaylee Cavanaugh and her world, you can check out the free ebook prequel coming out on July 1, the same day Prey officially hits the shelves!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Don't forget to grab a cookie (or fuzzy rabbit depending on your appetite) on your way home!
Thank you so much for having me!

Isn't she just a fabulous author? It takes a sharp mind and an even sharper wit to come up with a character as vivacious as Faythe. Speaking of, look who just came walking in!
So Faythe, thanks for joining us!
No problem. It’s good to get off the ranch without scoring new scars, for once!
You seem to have an on again, off again relationship with major hunk Marc. I don't know how anybody could resist that spectacular body and animal magnetism. What about Marc, or his physique, first drew you in?
I’ve known him most of my life, so we kind of grew up together. He is undeniably hot, but we didn’t really connect on a personal level until I was in high school. And I’d have to say that the feature that really drew me in was his eyes. He has these amazing brown eyes with little flecks of gold in them. They stay the same color, even in his cat form. Beautiful!
It's got to be touchy having multiple guys vying for your attention. Any suggestions for the rest of us should we ever found ourselves in your shoes?
Yeah. Try not to be in my shoes. Seriously. There are only two guys, but it gets pretty tense around here sometimes.
Speaking of shoes, we just love your wardrobe! If you had to sum it up in a sentence or less, how would you describe your style?
Very casual. Utilitarian. I work in black tees, jeans, and boots. And I work most of the time. Makes laundry pretty easy. ;-)
I hear cats are all the rage right now. I actually have a small black cat - sometimes I think she's plotting my demise. What's your take on domestic cats?
Ha! Cats are all the rage! I love it. ;-) As for domestic cats, well… they don’t like us very well. We’ve never been able to have pets, because our scent terrifies them. But I have to say I like that humans have domestic cats as pets. That’s much smarter than trying to tame a werecat. ;)
No doubt! Thanks for stopping by Faythe. I'm sure you've got a lot going on. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Whoa! Thanks Meaghan! The link was correct, but my typing was not. It should be fixed now.
Great post! :)
Hi Rachel,
I've found a new to me series to read! I'm looking forward to reading your books!
Congratulations on Prey and your YA debut coming up!
Rachel
Do you have to read the books in order, or will it completely throw me off if I don't?
drkcherry,
You could probably read the first two out of order, or even skip Stray, but I'd read Pride before Prey, in order to get the most out of them. The relationships build from book to book, as does the overarcing plot. ;-)
I already follow Rachel hence finding my way here :)
My question would be um ah. Have you ever considered taking a trip to New Zealand
I'd love to win a copy of Prey! This is one of my favorite series, and I've been itching to read Prey since I finished the first 3 books. I can't wait! And as for her YA series, I'm just as itchy, I can't wait to see what she has done in the YA world.
Jenni @ Falling Off The Shelf
Sorry, forgot my email address - jennilovevirgo AT aol DOT com.
And I was so excited about being able to win I also forgot to comment on part of the interview! I'm glad you asked how Faythe's character was designed. I was wondering if there was someone out in the world just like her. I guess not! (Although that smart mouth of course, lol)
And I have emailed you about the followings of Vincent, lol.
love th interview - esp. the Faythe one. :)
I already subscribe to Rachel's twitter, facebook, newsletter, live journal, forum and blog.
I have all the shifter books (exp Prey), so would want the books to go to a new reader of the series. But would love to get a signed copy of Prey.
Question for Rachel: will we see other shifter species in Prey and beyond?
Thx for stopping by! I was wondering if there will be a box set of the serie? I don't onw it yet but heard great comments and I'm planning to buy it!

Really hoping that I can get my hands on these books soon.

Hi there! I really enjoyed reading Stray, and the other three books are definitely on my TBR list. I thought Faythe was an engaging and fun character, and was amazed at how such a thick book flew by so fast! And I've heard great things about Prey in particular, so I'd love to win a copy!
I am now following Rachel's blog, and this one as well! Thanks for the great giveaway!

Hi, Rachael! I haven't read your shifters books but they sound so good and I can't wait to read them.
I became a blogger follower, by the way.
Oh! SO sorry for mispelling your name, Rachel! I have a friend who's RachAEL and I'm so used to spelling it that way!

Um... not in PREY, but we'll see a new species in SHIFT. ;-)

There are no plans for that at the moment. At least, not that I've heard. ;-)

No, none of my characters are based on real people. They're based on people I'd like to meet. Or to fight. ;-) And if there's a living Jace out there some where, I have yet to find him. Not for lack of looking. ;-)

While writing your first YA novel, was it hard to adapt to the new style?
Um, there was a sort of getting-to-know-you period with Kaylee, the new viewpoint character, but I think that’s true with any first book (in a series).

Rachel, do you plan to write other genres after your Shifter and Soul Screamers series are finished or will you write more paranormal books?
Right now, my writing interests lie with paranormals. What can I say? I love fantasy. ;-)

My questions are: What inspired you to at first start writing? And what attracted you to the idea of shifters for your books?
I’ve been writing stories since I was 5, so I really don’t remember what got me started. ;-) As for my Shifters books, I was attracted to that idea because I like werewolf stories, but I didn’t have anything to add to the existing werewolf lore. And I love cats, so werecats seemed a natural choice. Also, large cats are much more slinky and seductive than wolves, and more dangerous, in reality. I love getting to write about both aspects. ;-)

Thank you! I found it in a baby names book, as an alternate spelling of “Faith.”

I’m not sure what you mean by a routine, but I do write in the same place every day, and I usually have a bottle of water and a mug of coffee.

How different was it writing for YA? What changes in style or approach did you have to consciously make?
The only conscious changes I can think of is that my YAs don’t have open-door sex scenes, or as much foul language. But they’re still very dark and gritty, and deal with very dark subject matter, especially as the series progresses.
Rachel did you grab a cookie or a fuzzy rabbit on the way home?
I already follow rachel on both blog and her forum.
Thanks

Wow - That is an awesome interview! I forgot that Faythe couldn't have any pets (make sense though)! I don't know what I would do without my pets greeting me at the door - be a lil lonely I guess.
Please enter me in the contest and I do NOT have any of the books in print, so I would be thrilled to win the entire series!
Thanks

Hi Rachel, can't wait to be able to read this series. I don't have any of your books yet but they are on my list.
Have you ever considered writing outside of the paranormal genre?

PamS told me about you here Rachel! Big hello! Huge congrats on your release. I do have book one here and so looking forward to read. I've heard so much wonderful about your series!! I'm too excited about your YA books. I haven't read much but those I read are either historical or paranormal and yours with a banshee is so unique! So looking forward to those too Rachel. Great to read your interview!! I love the name Faythe. How did you come up with that name? Does it have a special meaning?

Hi! My name is Cindy and I wanted to know how Rachel picks her characters’ name =)
I started out with a big baby name book, but for the past couple of years, I've used several different online baby name sites, as well as one site that lists the most popular 1000 names in each gender, from the year 2000 census. Very convenient. ;-)

Since you didn't even think of writing till years after college what did you actually major in?
I have a BA in English. ;-)

I love the covers for the Prey series. Do you get to decide on how it looks or is it from the publisher?
My publisher's art department designs the covers, with input from marketing, as well as a form I fill out telling them what the characters look like. ;-)

Hey Rachel, how does it feel to have your books so loved by fans?
Oh, you're sweet! My readers are awesome, and I love getting to interact with everyone online. ;-)

Anything's possible... But nothing's written in stone yet. ;-)

Yes, I will sleep. A lot, probably, so I don't have to think about the release. I'll be answering a lot of email and doing lots of stuff online, trying to keep the buzz going. The first week or two of a book's release is very, very important for sales numbers. ;-0

Not since I started writing novels. Right now, my heart belongs to urban fantasy. ;-)

I found it as an alternate spelling for "Faith" in a baby name book. It doesn't have any special significance within the books. I just think it's pretty, without being too girly. ;-)
I haven't read the Shifters books before, but I hope to soon!

I suppose my question would be: When you're writing the YA books, is there ever anything you start to put in the story but have to change because of them being YA?
oh and I already follow her blog

Rachel,
A few questions for you. Your writing is so vivid and expressive without feeling bogged down. How do you do it? Does it all come out this way in the first draft or do you have to rake over and over it before it gets that way?
Thanks so much for taking the time.
